Buchanan's Nontraditional Couples and Families Group Chair Maureen Cohon to be Honored by The Women and Girls Foundation

October 14, 2009

Pittsburgh, PA, October 14, 2009 — Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney is proud to announce that on November 7, 2009, Family Law and Mediation attorney Maureen B. Cohon — chair of the firm's Nontraditional Couples and Families Group — will be honored by The Women and Girls Foundation (WGF) at it's 5th Anniversary Celebration, "The Art of Justice: Women Shaping the Law."

Cohon has been chosen as one of 20 prominent attorneys, judges, advocates and policymakers that have made Southwest Pennsylvania a better place for women and girls to live, work and thrive by shaping the laws of the region to be more fair and inclusive for all people. The selection committee reviewed nominations and credentials of women from throughout the region. Cohon was chosen due to her leadership in the community and her strong commitment to gender equity.

As an honoree, Cohon has been invited to be part of the Host Committee for the event, which will feature special guest speaker Kim Gandy — a nationally recognized leader and advocate for women's rights in public policy, and former president of the National Organization for Women.

About the Women and Girls Foundation

The Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania is an independent community-based foundation serving eleven counties in Southwest Pennsylvania. Its mission is to achieve equity for women and girls in the region. The organization promotes social change in the region by addressing fundamental social inequalities and raising the awareness of these inequities to the media, to voters, to legislators, and corporate and non-profit decision makers. By serving as an independent and clear voice, the foundation strives to bring together women and men in the region to work together to find solutions to create sustained equity for all of its citizens.

In 2005, the Women and Girls Foundation pledged to honor a diverse group of women each year who are engaged in dynamic work in exciting and challenging career fields in Southwest Pennsylvania. The purpose of this award event is to honor women of courageous excellence and to inspire young women to see the broad range of career options available to them. This year's event will be held November 7, 2009, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture.
